A Case of Volvulus of Stomach

Abstract
1. A case of volvulus of stomach in 49 yrs old female is presented. There is up ward lateral
displacement of the stomach with organoaxial and mesenteroaxial rotation into the thoradic
cavity through the eventration of the left diaphragm. Parts of duodenum, small bowel and splenic
flexure of the colon also passed through the eventration of the left diaphragm.
2. At operation the stomach was de-rotated back to its normal position, and the anterior wall
of the stomach was sutured to the anterior abdominal wall. The esophageal hiatus was made
more snug by suturing it behind the esophagus. The eventration of the left diaphragm was
repaired by imbrication.
Post-operatively the patient did well, except for persistent pain in the left flank and lower
chest (related to tightening of diaphragm?). A post-operative upper G-I series showed the stomach
in a normal position, but some persistent elevation of the left diaphragm. The patient was
discharged on the eleventh P.O. day.
